
Prof. Stanley B COHEN (USA)
Dr. Cohen has been in private practice since 1979 with
Rheumatology Associates, a 10-person rheumatology group,
in Dallas, Texas. He is also Coƒ{Medical Director of Metroplex
Clinical Research Center (MCRC) and Clinical Professor
of Internal Medicine in the Division of Rheumatology at
the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School. MCRC
has played a pivotal role in the development of the majority
of newer-generation therapies for rheumatoid arthritis
over the last 20 years. Along with other members of the
practice, Dr. Cohen has been involved in both medical
student and rheumatology fellow training through UT Southwestern.
Dr. Cohen was born in Birmingham, Alabama and completed
his undergraduate degree at the University of Virginia,
where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He attended medical
school at the University of Alabama in Birmingham, where
he was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha and graduated with
honors. Dr. Cohen completed his residency at UT Southwestern
in Dallas and his rheumatology fellowship at UT Southwestern/St.
Paul Medical center, training with Dr. Morris Ziff.
Through MCRC, Dr. Cohen has been extensively involved
in clinical research, with his primary focus initially
glucocorticoid-induced bone loss and subsequently rheumatoid
arthritis. In addition to participation as principal investigator
on multiple protocols, he has been involved in protocol
development as well as data analysis and subsequent publication.
He has been an author of 75 articles published in peer-reviewed
journals.
In addition to a busy private practice, Dr. Cohen has
served in multiple leadership positions in the Dallas
area. He is a past Chairman of the Board of Directors
of the Arthritis Foundation, North Texas Chapter and past
President of the medical staff of Dallas Rehabilitation
Institute, and has served on the Executive Committee of
St. Paul Medical Center.
Dr. Cohen has been involved with the American College
of Rheumatology in many capacities over the last 30 years.
He has been a member of the Section on Rehabilitative
Rheumatology Executive Committee and the Clinical Trials
Subcommittee and has chaired the Committee on Rheumatologic
Care Physicians¡¦ Network Southwest Region, the Magnetic
Resonance Imaging White Paper Task Force, the Corporate
Relations Committee, and the Finance Committee. He has
served as Vice President (1998ƒ{1999) and President (1999ƒ{2001)
of the ACR Research and Education Foundation and was a
member of the ACR Board of Directors in 2001ƒ{2004 and
from 2005 to the present. He became ACR Secretary-Treasurer
in 2005 and in 2007, when that position was separated
into two, he became Secretary. He was named President-Elect
of the ACR in 2008 and became President in October,2009.
Dr. Cohen has been the recipient of the Medical Professional
Award and the Coggeshall Lifetime Achievement Service
Award from the Arthritis Foundation, North Texas Chapter.
He also received the Outstanding Commitment Award from
the North Texas Lupus Foundation. He has been recognized
by inclusion in Best Doctors in Dallas, D Magazine, Who¡¦s
Who In Medicine, and Super Doctors, Texas Monthly Magazine.
Dr. Cohen has been married for 32 years to Jo, who has
been actively involved in volunteer work in Dallas. They
have 2 children, Max, who works in finance, and Leigh,
who is working in clinical research.
